The first meeting of the newly constituted Congress Working Committee concluded on September 17 in Hyderabad with a clarion call to party’s rank and file to unite to overthrow the “dictatorial’ regime of Prime Minister Narendra Modi led BJP government and work diligently to form an alternative government in the country.

The meeting that began on September 16 deliberated extensively for two days on ideological and electoral issues taking stock of the prevailing situation in the country and preparedness of the organization for the forthcoming assembly elections in five states and in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

While the country’s oldest party welcomed the “continuing consolidation” of the Indian National Developental, Inclusive Alliance (INDIA taking a resolve to turn it into “an ideological and electoral success”, the CWC also underscored that the opposition block has rattled the Prime Minister and the BJP.

“The CWC reiterates the Congress party’s resolve to make the INDIA initiative an ideological and electoral success so that our country is freed from divisive and polarising politics; the forces of social equity and justice are strengthened; and the people get an Union government that is responsible, responsive, sensitive, transparent and accountable”, the resolution categorically said.

The Congress very intelligently decided to stay clear of the Sanatan Dharma debate making it clear that it will not get drawn into the controversy. The party leadership had decided to stay away from the debate in full knowledge that the RSS and the ruling party with its top leadership including PM Modi are very keen that the Congress walks into the trap which then could be exploited electorally by the ruling dispensation.

Former party chief Rahul Gandhi told delegates that the issue was a distraction from real issues confronting people while former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Digvijay Singh reportedly asked the party to adopt a cautious approach in the whole issue.

In a yet another move to counter the communal agenda of the BJP, Congress president Kharge demanded that the process of the 2021 census be immediately set in motion with a caste based census while accusing the Modi government that the delay in holding the census had resulted in 14 crore people being deprived of the right to food law and nearly 18 percent people being left out of the MGNREGA net.

At the same time with an eye on the women electorate, the Congress adopted a resolution demanding that the Women’s Reservation Bill which has been passed by the Rajya Sabha during the Congress lead Manmohan Singh government should be passed by the Lok Sabha during the Special session of Parliament starting from September 18. The Congress stressed that giving 33 percent reservation to women in elected bodies was the party’s commitment since Rajiv Gandhi government days.

A scathing attack on the Modi government for “failing on all fronts” was launched by Kharge who said that this is not the time for us to rest. “In the last 10 years under BJP rule, the challenges faced by ordinary people have multiplied. The Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) refuses to address the concerns of the poor, farmers, labourers, women, and youth; instead, he cannot look beyond himself,” the Congress chief alleged.

“In such circumstances, we cannot remain mute spectators,” he added.

“We must work tirelessly, putting aside personal interests. We must prioritise the success of the party, putting aside our personal differences,” Kharge underlined to the leaders present at the meeting.

Kharge urged leaders to unite and overthrow “this dictatorial government” in order to save democracy.

Noting that 2024 also marks the centenary of Mahatma Gandhi’s election as the Congress president, Kharge said the most fitting tribute to the Mahatma would be to oust the BJP from power in 2024.

In full realization of the significance of the coming assembly elections that are slated to be held anytime soon in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Rajasthan and Telangana where the Congress has high stakes, Kharge asserted that the people are looking for an alternative and the party’s victories in Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka elections are clear proof of this.

Heads of units of the party in the poll bound states presented status reports of their respective states  to the party’s highest decision making forum with Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge stressing upon the need for unity which can ensure victory in the electoral battles ahead,

He also emphasised that leaders must exercise self-restraint and avoid going to the media with statements against their party colleagues or the party so that the organisation’s interests are not harmed.

“Likewise, organisational unity is of utmost importance. Only through unity and discipline can we defeat our adversaries. This was evident in Karnataka, where we remained united and fought with discipline to achieve success,” he said.

“Our goal must be to defeat the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and work diligently to form an alternative government in the country,” the Congress chief stressed.

Noting that there are challenges that lie ahead, Kharge said these challenges aren’t just those of the Congress and they concern the survival of Indian democracy and the preservation of the Indian Constitution.

“I would like to ask the state presidents and Legislative party leaders present here: Are your committees at the mandal, block and district level ready? Are we giving them regular programmes? Have we started identifying potential candidates?” Kharge said at the meeting.

Kharge urged leaders to unite and overthrow “this dictatorial government” in order to save democracy.

Deliberations and resolutions adopted at the CWC meeting in Hyderabad reflect growing confidence of the party that was divided and rudderless some time back but election of the party president and over four months long Bharat Jodo Yatra of Rahul Gandhi seem to have turned the moribund outfit into a determined and dedicated organization eager to defeat a government that has threatened every institution and bury the ‘Idea of India’ that had evolved during the Mahatma Gandhi led freedom struggle.
